LISTEN: No Flashing Matter talks to Sophie Maddocks

Writer's picture: Ellie MooreEllie Moore

On Wednesday, I spoke to Sophie Maddocks, a doctoral student in the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania.

Sophie has researched and published articles spanning several elements of image-based sexual abuse, primarily 'revenge' porn, and has worked closely with young people in the UK and the US to teach media literacy.

I wanted to get a sense of how important this education is, as better education for school children about how to conduct themselves both online and with others is considered among experts in this field, of paramount importance if we are to tackle a problem like cyber flashing, or image-based abuse generally.

Sophie also highlighted the importance of examining perpetrator's behaviours as a group, detailing the need to examine how these people may obtain their information, how and where they communicate online, as well as the responsibility that bystanders face when an explicit sexual image is shared to someone they know, or if they witness an incident in public:

You can hear more from Sophie in No Flashing Matter, the radio documentary, on December 13th.
